Humanity

Humanity expresses how a vampire maintains human attachments, empathy, and a sense of responsibility while living with the Beast. It is not a measure of combat strength or a guarantee of good behavior: it tracks the struggle to remain connected to people rather than treating them only as prey.

Overview

A standard vampire player character starts at Humanity 7. Apply any creation-guide, age-category, or Predator Type adjustments explicitly; a newly Embraced character can use a different starting value when that creation option specifies one. Humanity ranges from 0 to 10, with 0 marking the loss of the character to the Beast rather than a normal playable rating.

Stains and Remorse

Record Stains in the unfilled part of the ten-space Humanity tracker. They reflect relevant violations of Chronicle Tenets and other acts assigned Stains by the rules. A Conviction can mitigate a Tenet violation when the circumstances genuinely support it; it is not a blanket exemption. At the end of a session with Stains, roll the remaining unmarked spaces, with a minimum of one die. Any success preserves Humanity; no successes costs one Humanity. Clear the Stains after the test.

Why the rating matters

Humanity affects the vampire's ability to pass as living, use Blush of Life, tolerate food, resist frenzy, and recover from torpor. Lower Humanity can impose penalties on interactions with mortals. Use the specific rating's rules rather than treating every one-dot change as the same penalty.

Overwhelming Stains

Stains beyond the available spaces cause Aggravated Willpower damage and degeneration-related impairment. This is separate from ordinary physical injury. Reaching Humanity 0 results in the loss of the character to the Beast and Storyteller control under the relevant rules.
