Counter roll: Composure + Subterfuge.
Choose fear or desire as the subject of the reading. Spend a few minutes talking with the target before making the test. An unsuspecting mortal is a Difficulty 0 test; a mortal who knows about vampiric abilities, or any supernatural target, can oppose the attempt with Composure + Subterfuge.
The result provides increasingly precise information: a margin of 1–2 identifies a broad concern or wish; 3–5 narrows it to a particular fear or desired outcome; 6 or more includes a clear understanding of its circumstances or personal history.
Increase the result by one success when the object of that fear or desire is present. Increase it by another success when the conversation concerns that subject. To keep the target from recognizing the purpose of the conversation, the user must win Composure + Subterfuge against Wits + Insight. This reveals the chosen fear or desire; it does not grant unrestricted access to the target’s thoughts.
