Willpower
Willpower measures a character's capacity to maintain control, commit to a difficult choice, and withstand mental or social pressure. Its tracker records both deliberate expenditure and the strain inflicted by conflict.
Overview
Generate maximum Willpower as Composure + Resolve + Misc. With Attributes rated 1–5 and no explicit bonus, the base rating is 2–10. Misc defaults to zero and includes only a rule or recorded ruling that changes maximum Willpower. Healing damage or adding resistance dice does not increase the maximum.
Capacity, recovery, and protection
Panacea restores Willpower damage, Unswayable Mind adds resistance dice, and Self-Assurance protects against certain Willpower damage. None of those effects adds maximum Willpower. The Bahari’s The Womb’s Blood can grant +2 Resolve until dawn and explicitly adds two Willpower; calculate this through Resolve, not a second Misc bonus.
Art of Will, from Carmelita Neillson’s loresheet, requires one hour of meditation before daysleep and Resolve + Academics at Difficulty 5, at most once per session. On awakening after a successful meditation, it provides one temporary, spendable point above the normal Willpower pool. This is a floating point, not a permanent maximum increase or a Misc capacity bonus. Record it separately from maximum Willpower. The project owner corrected the earlier permanent-point interpretation; the printed once-per-session limit was confirmed.
Spending Willpower
Spending a Willpower point marks one Superficial damage on this tracker. A common use is rerolling up to three ordinary dice; Hunger dice cannot be rerolled this way, and some rolls prohibit Willpower rerolls altogether. Other rules allow limited resistance to coercion or frenzy, or temporarily ignoring physical injury penalties.
Recovery and impairment
At the start of a session, normally clear Superficial Willpower damage equal to the higher of Composure or Resolve, subject to cliffhanger exceptions. The Storyteller can also award recovery for pursuing a Desire. When every box is damaged, impairment normally penalizes Social and Mental tests by two dice. Recovering spent points never by itself increases maximum Willpower.
Supported capacity
Chargen supports Willpower ratings from 2 to 20 so an explicitly approved exception can be represented. Twenty is an application capacity, not the ordinary V5 maximum. Keep any exceptional bonus separate from the Composure + Resolve calculation and identify its source.
